Open Online Courses on Assessment and Ed Data Sciences this Summer

Dear AAEEBL Colleagues--

 Here are two opportunities to enhance teaching, administration, and research. Indiana University School of Education is offering two fully online courses starting May 13, 2015. They can be completed for free as Big Open Online Courses (“BOOCs”) or for three graduate-level credits:

P507 Assessment in Schools/Educational Assessment BOOC.  Understand and improve assessment of learning in K-12, higher education, and informal contexts. Use a personalized curricular aim to develop specific competencies with assessment practices (item formats), principles (e.g., validity and bias), and policies (e.g., standardization and evaluation), and learn to engage with professional peers around these topics.  A self-paced option is available for non-credential students. A detailed syllabus and information for enrolling or registering is here. The course is completed in Google CourseBuilder.

 P574 Topical Seminar/Intro to Educational Data Sciences BOOC.  Explore the use of digital data in a wide range of educational contexts. Use a personalized professional context to explore data methods and applications associated with educational data mining, learning analytics, learner analytics/personalization, academic/institutional analysis, and systemic/instructional improvement. Interact with professional peers, the instructor, and international experts in these five areas. As an introductory course, no computational experience is necessary and all computational activities are optional.  A detailed syllabus and information for enrolling or registering is here. The course is completed in Canvas.

If taken for credit, these courses can be used towards an online certificate and graduate degree in Learning Sciences at Indiana University and may transfer to other programs. Evidence-rich digital credentials (“badges”) will be available to both credential and open students in both courses. These web-enabled credentials can contain detailed evidence of participation, completion, and competencies. Completers can also request a conventional certificate recognizing 30 hours of professional growth. Participants seeking local credits or professional growth recognition should check with the appropriate faculty or administrator.

The Assessment BOOC was developed with grant from Google and was first offered in 2013. Both courses are unlike traditional “distance education” or most MOOCs. While there are no scheduled synchronous activities, interactive wikifolios will let you interact efficiently with professional peers in similar and different roles.
